COVID-19 What is the Lesson?

This pandemic has certainly tested me. All my years of yoga training have prepared me for this moment and there have been times when it’s taken everything I have to dig deep and apply it.

In all, I keep asking myself, what is the lesson? What is it that I’m supposed to learn from this?

Here’s what I’ve learned so far,

  1. Never ever ever give up. Some days I feel like Rocky in the ring. I keep getting knocked down and every time I get back up I’m a little more battered and bruised. Just keep getting back up. Never give up.

  2. There is no shame in asking for help. Can I get a hell yeah??!! That little 5-year-old voice that used to say, “I can do it!” still rings in my 49-year-old brain. Guess what? It’s a myth. You don’t have to do it alone, you weren’t born to do it alone. I have regular zoom calls with two amazing girlfriends who are experiencing the same ups and downs. We’re on-call for each other. We meet as often or as little as one of us needs and it has been a Godsend. Don’t hesitate. Reach out for help when you need it.

  3. Let go of the non-essentials. Wow. This is a big one. One of the first things my husband and I did at the onset of this is a deep dive into our expenses. We looked at everything right down to the $8/month Amazon music membership and cut everything that was non-essential. It was liberating.

  4. Stop feeling guilty or ungrateful for feeling stressed because others have it worse. Brené Brown teaches us that to be empathetic, “We have to be in touch with our own feelings in order to understand someone else’s. This requires putting your own “stuff” aside to focus on your loved one.”

  5. Be grateful. Gratitude is my word for 2020 and it has been ringing in my ear since this whole thing started. I count my blessings every night, even down to the most simple ones like the Starbucks cinnamon coffee I get to make for myself every morning.

I’m sure there will be more before this is all over but that’s a good start for now.

I’d love to add your lessons to this list. What have you learned? Let me know. Leave a comment below.
